Rohingya in Bangladesh: After Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power in Bangladesh, people thought that the new government would build a new Bangladesh, but the results are just the opposite. A new problem has come in the country already struggling with religious and political violence. On Tuesday, Bangladesh’s foreign affairs advisor Mohammad Tauhid Hussain said that recently 8 thousand Rohingyas have entered the country by breaking the border. They have no place to live and the Bangladesh government is unable to stop them. The number of Rohingyas is increasing continuously.
Dhaka Tribune’s report quoted Foreign Minister Tauheed Hussain as saying that Rohingyas are entering Bangladesh to escape armed conflict in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. The Foreign Minister said that as per his information, about 8,000 Rohingyas have entered the country. A cabinet meeting will be held soon on this issue. He said that we have decided that they will not be given shelter in the country, but we have to discuss how long they should be allowed to stay in the country and how to expel them.
1 million Rohingyas already living in Bangladesh
When the Foreign Minister was asked whether he would send the Rohingya back to Myanmar, he replied that we will try to contact the Arakan Army. The Arakan Army is a rebel group of Myanmar, which has captured most of the territory of Myanmar. The minister said that this is the only way to send them back to Myanmar. He told that more than 10 lakh Rohingyas have been living in the Cox’s Bazar district of Bangladesh since 2017. These people have fled to Bangladesh after the military coup in Myanmar, not even a single Rohingya has been sent back yet.
Bangladesh does not have the capacity to provide shelter to Rohingya
Tauheed Hussain said that we sympathize with these people who are persecuted in Myanmar, but we do not have the capacity to give them shelter. The border with Myanmar has been sealed, but there is a problem in completely securing the border. Since it is not possible to completely seal the border, the government is still trying its best to stop the Rohingya. The minister said that in the next two days we will decide what we have to do.
